The Long and Storied History of The Cheeseburger

There are several theories of the history of the cheeseburger. Going all the way back into time to the 11th Century it was the Mongols that started using beef patties for the purpose of traveling on long trips to places such as Moscow. This was how the patties migrated to Germany in the city of Hamburg. From there it extended to New York. It is obvious how they got its name which is a hamburger or Hamburg steak.

Cheeseburger History

It is not a cheeseburger without the cheese or bun. The actually bun was created by a man named Walter Anderson during the year 1916 but previously the patty would sit between two pieces of bread. Also called a hamburger sandwich there is a few to have claimed to be its creator. Charlie Nagreen from Wisconsin claimed to have flattened meatballs and place it on bread; reason being that people had difficulty holding the food during the county fair. That same year, 1885, the Menches Brothers from Hamburg, New York, took credit for also inventing it during a fair. Louis' Lunch takes credit for this creation and claims that its purpose was to feed the busy working class during 1900.

The cheeseburger was created between the years 1924 to 1926. Out of California, a man Lionel Sternberger tells a story of how he came up with the idea. While passing by a homeless man on the streets of Pasadena, the homeless man made the suggestion of adding cheese to the patty and bun. Sternberger liked the idea and hence the cheeseburger was invented.

If you ask Kaelin's Restaurant you will get a different answer to the history of this legendary food. Located in Lousville, Kentucky, this restaurant claims to have invented the burger with cheese in 1934. However in 1935, awarded to a drive in called Humpty Dumpty, the trademark was rewarded to them, located in Colorado.

So who is the genius who thought of adding a slice of cheese to a delicious beef patty on a bun? The answer isn't clear. Many states have their own account which claims they are the inventors. Without a doubt it was invented in America and over the years has spread in popularity all over the world. And that's the history of the cheeseburger!
