Krispy Kreme Burger

Krispy Kreme Burger

Krispy Kreme Burger

The subject of much controversy, the Krispy Kreme burger - in any of its various forms - may just be the one that divides opinion.

Usually a burger is served in a bun, a beautifully rich and lean hamburger in a soft or toasted bun with a side dish of fries or salad and garnishing on the bun itself, but in this version - dubbed by some the 'unhealthiest burger in the world' - the bun is replaced by a glazed Krispy Kreme donut!

Does that appeal to you? It's not to everyone's taste but it does have something of a following, and varieties have begun to appear across America served by restaurants, fast food outlets and even at sporting games.

Especially in the form of the Luther burger, named after the soul singer Luther Vandross (who, according to legend, either loved it or invented it) and served at the ground of the Gateway Grizzlies baseball team in St Louis. Despite the colossal - and worrying - 1000 calorie claims for the burger it has become famous and attendances at games have risen as a result.

It is hard to pin down where the first incarnation of the Krispy Kreme burger was attempted, but when all is taken into account it was a given that somebody, somewhere was always going to try a burger in a glazed donut.

That the aforementioned Luther burger uses prime Angus beef speaks of its prowess, while another take on the theme - the Wisconsin State Fair version - adds the topping of chocolate covered bacon and Wisconsin cheddar cheese!

This is the sort of burger that you have to try, but perhaps only once; such an intake of calories cannot be good for you and while the Krispy Kreme burger is clearly a promotional tool of some power there is much merit to the concern about its health effects.
